Today’s challenge is pretty cool because it reminds me of the movie Freaky Friday. Have you ever had an out of body experience or dreamed of having one with your favorite person in the world?
Well, here is your chance. Today’s topic is “If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why?” I thought about this long and hard. For one, I am finally at a place where I am living my best life or at least getting to the point where that will be totally true. With that said, I don’t really have a desire to be like anyone else but me. That new mentality is a huge win for me. But, if I really had to choose it would be the Queen, the BossLady of Shondaland, Shonda Rhimes.
Although I will admit I’ve never watched Grey’s Anatomy (yet) Shonda sure knows how to keep her audience on lock for season after season and still dominates Thursday nights on TV with Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder. With her shows being broadcasted internationally and in a plethora of languages, she is living the life that I could only dream of living one day. Also, after reading/listening to her book, Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person, I feel like she and I are close friends. Shonda spoke about how as a child she’d have these recurring scenarios in her head that she would use to create stories with. When she spoke about that it reminded me of my own childhood. As a writer we quite literally have characters in our head all the time. It sounds as crazy as it feels, trust me.
Further, I appreciate Shonda’s decision not to get married but still have children. How badass is that? Also, she is the Shonda Rhimes is the epitome of the woman I aspire to be like as I continue developing in my writing and personal life as well. Another thing that makes me want to be Shonda for a day is her sheer determination of saying “yes” to becoming healthier through her dedication to eating better and making exercise a part of her daily life. I honestly have to credit her for inspiring me to really move forward with also taking my health more serious AND my writing. You know what, as a matter of fact I think I am slowly turning to my own version of Shonda LOL but hey I do not mind.
On a serious note, thanks Shonda for sharing your gift with the world nonstop and reminding others that their dreams are also valid. Thank you for also pushing forward the reality that as black women we also have layers of personality that need to be portrayed within the world of TV & film. We are not just “one type of black,” it don’t work like that. You’ve shown the world our sensitivity but still coupled with being a boss at the same time (shoutout to Olivia Pope & Annalise). I want to live in the abundance of badassery just as you said in your book “Badassery, I’m discovering, is a new level of confidence—in both yourself and those around you.”
Alright so you know what time it is, your turn! So if you could be anyone in the world, who what it be and why?
